Employees from Warner Bros. Entertainment’s Impact Giving Program Volunteered Their Time to Help Eliminate Substandard Housing Last Saturday

Fifty Warner Bros. Entertainment employees volunteered last Saturday, Feb. 26 for a Habitat for Humanity Team Build. In addition to the work completed at the build, the employees learned about our organization and our Enriched Neighborhood Model. They also got a chance to meet with and learn about the families who will receive the houses they worked on. It was a great event and a great "hand up" to the Pacoima project. Thank you Warner Bros.!!

The Annual Builders Ball is Next Friday, March 11

Don't forget that the Annual Builders Ball is right around the corner. The event will be hosted by stellar talent; Holly Robinson Peete of CBS's The Talk and funnyman, Gary Anthony Williams, known for his work as a series regular from Malcom in the Middle, Boston Legal, and Jeff Foxworthy's Blue Collar TV. The night's theme is Salute to La Chanteuse at Chez Habitat, a tribute to the mid-twentieth century singers in Paris. This will be one glamorous and entertaining event.

The event will take place Friday, March 11 at 6:30 PM, at the Universal Sheraton.

Last year, over 900 community members, including the cast of Jimmy Kimmel Live! and 90210, took part in the festivities and joined Wayne Colmer, chairman of the Habitat affiliate serving the San Fernando and Santa Clarita Valleys, in advocating for the need to “make our world a better, safer place to live – especially for children.”

“American Dream Walk” is a family-friendly event and Habitat encourages youths to share in the experience and follow the example of young Hollywood stars that have formed the Hollywood Kids for Habitat team and are challenging the adult stars to see who can raise the most funds.

Habitat for Humanity: Started with a visit to Koinonia Farm

Habitat for Humanity was created when Millard Fuller and his wife visited Koinonia Farm, a small, interracial, Christian community in Georgia. Koinonia Farm was founded in 1942 by farmer and biblical scholar Clarence Jordan. Koinonia Farm followed the principal of partnership housing wherein those in need of adequate housing worked side by side with volunteers to build simple, decent houses. The Fullers’ were so impressed by the model that they left their affluent life in the United States to travel and live in Zaire for three years. There they helped build homes for 2,000 people. When the Fullers’ got back from Zaire they began to seriously plan how to implement the partnership housing model worldwide in an organized and successful manner.

Habitat for Humanity is now an effective non-profit that has serviced over 3,000 communities worldwide. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn became early supporters of Habitat. Millard Fuller chronicled the start of Habitat for Humanity and established its guiding principles in his book “Love in Mortar Joints”.

Habitat for Humanity youth volunteers receive State Farm® grant

San Fernando Valley (Aug. 5th 2010) – Habitat SF/SCV Youth United has been selected to receive a $2000.00 financial education grant from Habitat for Humanity International and State Farm. The grant provides resources to train and empower youth to educate their community in the importance of financial literacy.

“Our affiliate’s unique Enriched Neighborhood Model brings affordable housing to a new level. We have realized that financial literacy is the key to sustainable homeownership. This along with a variety of other classes - computer training, English as a second language, health and dental workshops, and more – creates the supportive neighborhood necessary to help lift families out of poverty and toward self-sufficiency” said Jesseca Woywod, Habitat for Humanity SF/SCV’s Youth United Coordinator.
“We are excited that our Youth United Group has received this award and look forward to seeing their great work in our community.”

Habitat SF/SCV Youth United works in partnership with Habitat for Humanity San Fernando/Santa Clarita Valleys to help families obtain a safe, decent and affordable home. After attending training, Habitat SF/SCV Youth United plans to return to their schools and community organizations to relay the valuable information and training to their peers.

Financial literacy is an important component of the Habitat partner family process. Prior to becoming a Habitat homeowner, partner families must demonstrate the ability to repay a no-profit mortgage. Habitat offers financial education workshops for partner families to attend. Additionally, Habitat for Humanity International provides personal finance resources online at http://www.habitat.org/habitat_learns/recipies_default.aspx.

State Farm and Habitat are offering four additional financial education grants to Habitat youth groups across the country. Since 2007, State Farm has served as the national corporate sponsor of Habitat for Humanity’s youth programs, with a sponsorship commitment of more than $1.1 million in grants each year. Additionally, State Farm offices contribute more than $500,000 annually to Habitat affiliates across the United States.
